This edition of 100 bookmarks forms part of my continuing artistic exploration into life stories, memory and the use of textiles. My love of reading equals my love of stitching and as an artist I find myself constantly remembering and revisiting skills and ideas from my own past.
The bookmark’s function as a “aide mémoire” seems to encapsulate our desire to hold onto our past, particularly our own life stories which shape both our identities and attitudes. These bookmarks are digitally printed onto a material which is both waterproof and tear-proof – increasing their chances of longevity.
The words “I must remember not to forget …..…” were often spoken by my mother as she juggled the demands of a busy life, and they became more and more poignant as Alzheimer’s Disease gradually robbed her of the ability to remember anything at all.
